TCGplayer

TCGplayer is a US marketplace for trading cards. This entry explains how its prices are read and what it means for buyers in Norway.

TCGplayer is a US online marketplace for trading cards, including Pokémon cards, where many independent sellers and shops list items. Prices are quoted in US dollars, and the platform is one of the most widely used sources of price data for the American market.

How the platform works

Sellers list single cards and sealed products, and a buyer can combine items from several sellers in one cart. Each card has its own page showing all active listings sorted by condition, edition and price. Condition is given on a scale that includes near mint, lightly played and damaged; it follows the same thinking as card condition in general, but is not identical to other companies' descriptions.

The platform also runs programs in which TCGplayer itself processes and ships orders for sellers. Which programs exist, and their terms, are set by TCGplayer and can change.

Prices and price data

On a card page TCGplayer typically shows several figures: lowest listed price, a mid price, a high price and a "market price". According to the platform, market price is built on recently completed sales rather than listings. The distinction matters; read more in sold vs listed prices and market price. Prices are usually shown per printing variant, such as normal and holofoil, and it is easy to read the wrong row.

The prices are American and reflect the American market. They can differ from European prices, for example on Cardmarket, because of differences in demand, currency and shipping.

Using TCGplayer from Norway

Many Norwegian collectors use TCGplayer as a price reference even when they buy elsewhere. Anyone wanting to order from it should check whether the seller ships to Norway, since a number of sellers only ship within the United States. When goods come from abroad, shipping, VAT and duty may be added; see importing to Norway and fees and shipping. The dollar exchange rate also affects the final amount, see currency.

Limitations

  • Market price can rest on few sales for scarce cards, see liquidity.
  • The figures cover TCGplayer's own market and do not capture sales on other platforms.
  • Cards with several variants, such as first edition and later printings, may sit in different rows.

Seller fees and buyer terms are found in TCGplayer's own price lists and terms, not here. The service's features and terms can change, so always check the company's own pages.
