Cardmarket

Cardmarket is a European marketplace for trading cards. This entry explains its price terms and how to read the prices from Norway.

Cardmarket is a European online marketplace for trading cards, including Pokémon cards, with both private sellers and professional shops. Prices are quoted in euros, and the platform is a main source of price data for the European market.

How the platform works

Each card has a product page listing all active offers from sellers in different countries. A buyer can filter by the seller's country, condition, language and other properties, and combine cards from the same seller in one order to save on shipping. Condition is given on the platform's own scale from mint to poor. It is related to general card condition but not identical to other companies' descriptions, so read the seller's description and photos.

Sellers and buyers carry reputations based on earlier trades, and this is an important part of trust on the platform. Isolated bad trades are still possible.

Price terms

Cardmarket shows several figures for each card. Among them are the lowest listed price (the "from" price), a price trend and averages over different periods, such as the last day, week and month. How each figure is defined is explained in the platform's own help. The difference between what sellers ask and what actually sells is covered in sold vs listed prices, and more broadly under market price.

Prices apply to cards in a given condition, and the gap between a listing in the best condition and one in weaker condition can be large. Comparing prices across conditions therefore easily gives a skewed picture.

Use from Norway

Norway is not in the EU, so an order from a seller in an EU country counts as an import into Norway. That can bring VAT, a clearance fee from the carrier and possibly duty; see importing to Norway. Shipping varies with the seller's country and shipping method, see fees and shipping. Because prices are in euros, the exchange rate affects the final amount, see currency.

Language and editions

Because the platform is European, cards exist in many languages, and the price can differ for the same card in English, German, French or Japanese. Filter by language, and check that the listing concerns the right edition and printing, see English and Japanese cards.

Limitations

  • Price data only captures trades on the platform itself.
  • For cards that rarely trade, averages can rest on few sales, see liquidity.
  • Other sources such as TCGplayer may show different figures for the same card.

Seller and buyer fees are found in the platform's own price lists and terms. They can change and are therefore not stated here.
