A population report is an overview that a grading company publishes of how many copies of each card it has graded, broken down by grade. In other words, it shows how many cards the company has assessed and how many landed at each grade.
What the report shows
For a given card, such as a particular edition of a particular design, the report lists the count at each grade and often the total. At PSA it is openly available on the website, and Beckett and CGC have comparable overviews. The report tells you how common or uncommon a particular grade is among cards that have been submitted.
Why collectors look at it
The value of a slab is often tied to how few share the same grade. When few copies sit at the top grade, that can support a higher price, while a large number means more competition. The report is therefore an important part of price assessment; see the grading scale. Price still depends on demand as well, and a low count does not automatically mean high value.
Pitfalls
- Submitted cards only: the report counts only cards sent for grading, not all that exist. Many cards are never graded.
- Graded more than once: a card can be resubmitted or moved between companies, so the same card may be counted several times.
- Lost or destroyed slabs: the report is not updated when a slab is opened or lost.
- Different breakdowns: editions and printings may be split differently, so check that you are looking at the right entry; see first edition.
The report in practice
The figures change constantly as new cards are graded, so take them from the company's own pages rather than relying on old copies. Comparing population between companies calls for caution, because each company counts only its own. See card grading for background, and is grading worth it? for how the likelihood of a high grade enters the assessment.
Population reports are an example of how data from the grading companies has become part of the market. They are used not only by collectors but also by those who analyse price movements for particular cards. It is still worth remembering that they are just one of several sources, and that they capture one part of the market, not the whole.
